SHOW WARNINGS

Elf is a wonderfully fun holiday story centered around the character of Buddy the Elf. If you want to bring children to the show here are some things to consider:

  • There is quite a bit of discussion about the question of “Is Santa Real?”. The ‘real’ Santa does play a part, but there are lots of mall Santas in the show who sing a song “Nobody Cares About Santa” which is reprised by ‘real’ Santa at a moment of despair.
  • There is a strong theme of a father who works too hard, and is annoyed by Christmas and his family obligations. One song is called “Christmas always gets in the way”. This situation has a positive resolution, but some moments are sad and thoughtful.
  • Buddy has a love interest in the story which is bumpy, but sweet. They get married, and Buddy has a line about a ‘special dance’ that brought him a child at the end of the show.
  • Buddy’s mother is mentioned in the show, but never met. It is explained as a college relationship where the father never knew about his young son.
  • Buddy’s crawling into Santa’s sack, and being raised at the North Pole without any effort to find his real parents is not addressed in the show.
  • The show will run 2.5 to 2.75 hours with intermission. Dinner will add an extra hour. It is likely that people will not be leaving the show until after 10 PM.
We hope these facts help you to determine if the show would be suitable for your child or not. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
